My name is Tom Spaulding and I have gum disease.

Actually I used to have it and that’s why I invented Oral Breeze oral irrigators. Here’s my story. You might recognize your own experience…

Like most people I didn’t take gum disease seriously, in the beginning that is. In 1973, at the age of 30, my dentist told me officially that I had Periodontitis.

Dental Treatments Proved Costly and Invasive

I spent two decades and 1,000’s of dollars trying to treat and reverse the damaging effects of periodontal disease. Even though I faithfully visited my friendly Periodontist, nothing worked to subdue my gum disease. Actually my teeth became so loose and spread out that I could barely whistle.

In 1997 my Periodontist had a 3 point plan to treat my gum disease:

• shave my gums to stop them from further receding
• a tetracycline implant to stop the infection
• if the first two steps failed - tooth extraction.

There had to be a less expensive, less invasive, and more effective way to treat my gum disease.

What was your breakthrough moment?

Actually there were two.

First, I discovered a dental hygienist that cared enough to get through to me. She convinced me that treating my ailing gums was in my own hands. Simple, I needed to irrigate my gums and teeth at bedtime. Unlike flossing, irrigation (water pressure cleaning) blasts off the loosely attached plaque and tonight’s snack of popcorn that’s hiding under my gum line. Germs and stray pieces of food have no place to hide.

Waterpik™ was a start

Once I bought into the oral irrigation message, I went out and bought an expensive oral irrigator device. You probably know the one I mean – the electric oral irrigator with its own water tank. It looked great and sounded great. But guess what? I didn’t use it.

It was just too messy and inconvenient with all its:

• filling
• cleaning
• emptying

I was committed to the promise of oral irrigation – just not this way. I knew I needed a quick and easy way to irrigate or I wouldn’t do it.

And then it came to me….

Not in my car. In the shower. While showering one Friday evening, it hit me. That’s the best time to irrigate – when I was already in the shower. If only there was an oral irrigator I could use in the shower. This new irrigator would have to be well-made, easy to attach to the shower head, and simple to use.

I created ShowerPik® originally to meet my needs. Others wanted it too.
